Fall River, located in Fall River Mills, California, is a spectacular spring creek that flows some 20 miles through the Fall River valley. It is primarily made of three spring creeks: little Fall River (Thousand Springs ) at the north-west end of the valley, Spring Creek to the north, and just east of that is Lava Creek, which dumps into Eastman Lake before it enters into the system. In addition, there is Big Lake and its springs at the east end of the valley. All of these waters come together at some point or another to make up the Fall River. Angling opportunities on the Fall River are huge! Not only does it have a technical aspect for the more experienced casters, it also offers great opportunities for the beginners.
The big misconception about Fall River is that you need to have excellent skill levels to fish the river. This is not true, although it helps to have a basic understanding of your equipment and how to use it, it’s not a requirement. I have taken out people with all levels of angling experience, and all levels have caught fish. If you have never fished the Fall River before, it does help to go out with a professional to take some of the guess work out of it.
Because Fall River is fished by boat only it makes for a perfect fishery for people of all ages and abilities. For anglers who enjoy the long cast there is a lot of swinging of small nymphs, emergers, and soft hackles. There is definitely plenty of nymph and indicater use and yes…there is always a fish eating a dry fly on the river somewhere! With conditions conducive for the hatches it can be good, and even great at times. Fall River is not just a phenomenal fishery, it also has a huge abundance of waterfowl, migratory birds, wildlife, and Indian history. Come and spend a day on the jewel of the north state and let me show you around!
