Steelhead are strange critters! Chasing them sometimes requires good sums of money. But, like duck hunting, if the ducks aren’t there, you are just out for a day in the field. The same goes for steelheading….if the fish aren’t in, you’re just out for a nice day on the water!
In northern California we are fortunate to have other options for the fishing. Sometimes we may only catch one or two, and other days we might catch a boat load but that is just winter fishing. Winter is a good time to try different techniques and methods. If you are successful with these techniques in the winter when fish can have a tendency of being a bit sluggish due to cold weather, then those same techniques will make you much more successful during the general season. One such technique that I like to use in the winter is fishing with streamers and trying to get larger fish to chase. Winter is a good time for this because a lot of the normal bug activity that we see during the general season is either cut short due to temperatures or simply not present. So….give it a try on your waters or give me a call to talk techniques and we can figure out something that will work for you.
