I like everyone else have been cooped up in the house, wondering if we are going to be able to get out for the 2020 Trout season opener. Before PG&E closed Baum Lake we were having decent winter fishing on the lake. Although the wind played a major role in making the fishing challenging, we managed to land some of the biggest fish I have seen out there in years. With yours truly taking a brown trout in the 8lb range and measuring out to 25inches. Even though the catch rate was down a little … [Read more...]
There’s More To Do In Fall River Mills Than Fly Fishing
Although fly fishing is the most popular activity in the Fall River Mills Valley, there's much more to this wonderful location than meets the eye and the casted fly. Fall River Mills is a very dynamic valley located in Northern California. About 1.5 hours drive east of Redding, CA.I think most miss out on the wonderful list of activities and resources this Northern California destination has to offers.Below is a gallery of photos that I feel represent some of the character of the Fall … [Read more...]
September And October On Fall River
Fishing in the fall or Autumn on Fall River can be a real treat. Its at that time of year that the colors change, temperature drops and we start to get Indian summer days. The waters start to go into a metamorphosis, it’s the final change of weather before winter. If the cycle makes the full change (if we don’t go into a drought) Then everything changes with it. The bugs change, water temperature changes, and the time of day when the window of opportunity is best changes also. It’s a good time … [Read more...]
Fishing Report: July 8, 2019
Upper Sacramento River The Upper Sac is in great shape, and the wading is no longer combat style. With more run off to continue for a while the water temp and level should remain exceptional for a little while longer. Not seeing as many Golden Stones as I had earlier in the season. But have been picking up fish on other bugs. Also, the evening dry fly fishing has been pretty good and worth sticking around for. Short line nymphing has been good and getting the fly down fast is the key. With the … [Read more...]
Fall Fishing Right on Schedule
With the Inter Mountain Fair under way here in the Fall River Valley it signals the start of the Fall Season, which means changes on the river. The fishing the last couple of weeks has been pretty good. The mornings are starting to get cooler leading to Indian summer afternoons. The bugs are getting smaller and have been coming off at various intervals during the day. Yes, the bugs are small #20 to #24. This means you really must pay attention as to what is on the water. Which makes it a … [Read more...]
Fishing Report August 21: Fall River, Pit River, McCloud
FIRE, SMOKE & FISH I have been fielding a lot of calls lately about the fires. I want to thank all of you who have called to check on me and to offer assistance should I need it. The hat fire had me on edge for a few days, but the fire crews were able to get it under control quickly keeping it away from any structures. The fire coupled with the loss of power and road closures made it a little stressful. Things here at this end of the state are slowly getting back to normal. Despite the smoke … [Read more...]
Mid Summer Fishing Report
Mid-Summer Fishing Fishing this summer has been really good, and it has been since the season opened back in April. It has not backed off even in the warmer months. At this point the Hex is about over and it was one of the better Hex hatches we have seen in a while. Out of a dozen plus trips I did on the hex only a couple were not worth my time. It stayed mostly in the mainstem of the river. It has not traveled up into the lower Fall River yet and it may not make it that far this season. I have … [Read more...]
